Music Studio
Students in kindergarten and above may enroll in lessons, depending on their readiness. Younger students, who cannot yet read words, will begin using solfege and exploring music on a general basis, with an emphasis on aural learning. Once a student can read words, they are typically ready to learn how to read notes and are introduced to more time at the piano.
Either an acoustic piano or a digital piano.
Acoustic pianos need to have all keys working and be tuned at least once a year (students can be easily discouraged by an out-of-tune instrument).
Digital pianos need to have weighted keys and contain all 88 keys, along with a sustain/damper pedal and bench at an appropriate height. A piano with a midi option is handy when hyperscribing on a notation app.
The physical studio has a large library of books that can go out on loan.
We also have a material fee, due at the time of payment, which covers books and materials that the student can keep. If additional material is required, the teacher will be in contact with the parents before it is purchased. For families with multiple students, duplicate copies of books are not necessary, except for theory workbooks.
Ideally, students will practice regularly for at least 5 days a week. Having a good-working instrument in an easily accessible area with proper lighting at an established time helps keep the routine. But time spent at the piano in sporadic bursts, driven by the desire of the student, is very beneficial. If the student hardly ever practices, lessons may still be beneficial as they provide that steady lifeline to the art.
We try to cultivate a love for music by covering a colorful gamut of everything musical: artistry, theory, improvisation, technique, lead sheets, sight reading, compositions, challenging repertoire, duets, church music, games, aural skills, app utilization and good practice habits in bite-sized segments at skill-appropriate levels. East student is different in their learning styles and interests. We try to find the connection between learning music and enjoying that music for each student.
